The Commonwealth Bank is bringing NFC to the iPhone

In a world first, the Commonwealth Bank today announced an iOS app called ‘Kaching’ and NFC enabled iPhone cases that will allow iPhone users to make purchases using their iPhone. There will be cases for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

According to Michael Harte (the Commonwealth Bank’s CIO), the new iPhone app could be available within days, as it is only awaiting App Store certification. There will however be a longer wait on the NFC enabled iPhone cases that will be available as an add-on.

The Kaching app will be available for free in the App Store, however the NFC enabled iPhone case will likely cost between $30 to $40, although the exact price and date of release has yet to be determined. Customers can however register their interest in getting the case.

Whilst the initial Kaching release is focused on the iPhone, Mr Harte has suggested that an Android version could be available in a matter of weeks. The Android app would be written from the ground up, it would not be a retrofit of the iPhone app.

If only Apple had put an NFC chip in the 4S then they wouldn’t need this silly case. Shame CBA aren’t releasing an Android or Meego version as the Nexus S or N9 would be able to handle this natively.

NFC will definitely be in the next iPhone, though it is still a good 12 months away. The app will be released on Android eventually, though the Commonwealth Bank has chosen to focus on the iPhone version first.
