The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS5, was released two weeks ago, and promised enhanced speed, along with its 200+ new features. New Relic decided to do a side-by-side test of 3000 web apps with two iPhones (presumably iPhone 4′s), one of the iPhones was running iOS4 (with Safari 5.0), whereas the other iPhone was running iOS5 (with Safari 5.1).
The above infographic shows that websites loaded on iOS5 in Safari 5.1 loaded just over two times faster, than those accessed on iOS4 in Safari 5.0. Based on these results (and not taking the 200+ new features in iOS5 into consideration), it is worthwhile to update your device (whether it is an iPhone 3GS/4 or iPad 1/2) to iOS5. It is likely that the speed improvement may not be as significant on older devices such as the iPhone 3GS, however I certainly wouldn’t expect the web browser to be any slower.
