Distimo did a study on the growing popularity amongst OS app stores with “Fremium” apps. Fremium apps are given to consumers as a free download, but in-app purchases expand the app.
Distimo found that amongst the 200 highest grossing apps in the Apple iTunes App store, 72% off the app revenue came from those that have in-app purchasing ability. In the App Store, only 4% off the apps have this ability. In 2010, only 28% of of the app revenue was generated this way.
Google’s Android Market saw similar results with 68% of the top 25 highest grossing apps.
