A Galaxy Nexus user in the United States recently won a challenge as part of Microsoft’s recent ‘Get Smoked’ campaign challenge to win a US$1,000 laptop. However, the Android user was informed he had lost ‘just because’ before the store manager ensured widespread publicity by changing the rules to justify the decision. Cue internet rage and a very public apology from Microsoft.
After pressing for a better reason, I was told that Windows Phone won “just because.” After trying to push for a real answer since I clearly won the contest by their rules, another Microsoft Store employee (possibly a manager) came by after noticing me asking more questions. Thinking on his feet, he quickly gave a ridiculous out-of-thin-air reason that I need to display the weather of different cities in different states and that “my phone could not do that”.
World Internet peace has been restored and now the question has to be asked: Is displaying the weather in two different cities a real test of speed for Windows Phone or would Microsoft have been better going for something a little more taxing on the handset?
