Today I've opted for a departure from the usual subject of MobilePhoneBlog posts. For much of the preceding hour or so I've been watching the excellent documentary, Secrets of the Superbrands. This is a documentary which very effectively re-frames information that anyone who follows the tech market will already mostly know in a very different context. It's intriguing stuff that I strongly felt the MobilePhoneBlog readership would enjoy. There's the small child who describes Nokia as an elderly person. Sony is imagined as being a... It seems to be an uphill battle for the Nokia and Windows Phone partnership. During a shareholder's meeting, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop addressed the crowd about issues with carriers and the use of Skype. Elop said: "Nokia seems to be having a problem with the distribution channel due to Skype…If the operator doesn't want us, it doesn't want us. We will appeal to them with other arguments. We have more to offer to them. It is a good point to start the discussion from Skype." Carriers are concerned that the use... (Keep reading..) |

It's been revealed that amidst Nokia's attempt to get back on top by investing in the Windows Phone 7 platform its revenue stream counts Apple as a major contributor. As with Microsoft and Google, to whom Apple also pays significant amounts of money to license the ideas that run the iPhone, payments made by Apple for licensing deals and settlements for claims of patent infringement have added more income to Nokia's bottom line than sales of the Lumia series... Firms iSuppli and IDC have changed their Windows Phone predictions and retracted their analysis that the operating system would take second place by 2015. Wayne Lam, senior analyst at IHS said the firm "ratcheted back" its analysis and believes that Windows Phone will come in third place. Ramon Llamas, a senior research analyst at IDC said the firm lowered its market share to 20.1%, but said that WP7 will be "pretty much statically tired with Apple" by 2016. The predictions seemed to be changed by the lack of Symbian users to... (Keep reading..) |

Marketing executive, Gavin Kim has left Microsoft after only five short months for mobile security company NQ Mobile to serve as Chief Product Officer. Prior to Microsoft, Kim was VP of Content and Services at Samsung. So what does that for Microsoft and Windows Phone when one of the executives leaves after five months? If we look at the computer industry as a whole, it is an ever extending chain of platform contests. In the beginning many different systems wrestle it out until one or two claim superiority over the rest. The case of smartphones is no different. Although the scale of engagement is debatable, platform wars have been going ever since the smartphone and tablet industry has come into being. We all know about the age-old tussle between Apple and Microsoft. While it is way too early to... (Keep reading..) |

A couple of days ago Microsoft uploaded an updated version of the Windows Phone SDK to their developer servers. The new version will now run on Windows 8 machines and, more significantly, sets Microsoft up to deviate from their original Windows Phone philosophy of providing an identical quality of user experience by mandating exactly what hardware can be used in Windows Phone handsets. This model is - or was - an interesting move by Microsoft when they announced the original WinMo7. It was clearly... (Keep reading..) |
